5 Things to Love About Living in Mississauga

December 20th, 2021 / Mississauga

There are so many great places to live in The GTA that some of them don’t always receive the attention they deserve. One of these underrated locales is Mississauga. All too often, home buyers overlook the city, which I think is a mistake. If you take a moment to explore Mississauga, you’ll quickly learn that it’s worthy of your attention.

Here are five things to love about living in the City of Mississauga…

1. The waterfront

Without a doubt, one of Mississauga’s most beloved features is its waterfront. Many local neighbourhoods allow homeowners to make the most of it, with stunning views and sought-after amenities. Take Port Credit, with its popular marina, charming restaurants on the water (like Snug Harbour), and recreational activities (think boating, rowing, and paddle boarding, among others).

Mississauga is also home to a lengthy stretch of the 730-kilometre Waterfront Trail, which connects beautiful parks, pathways, and natural areas across Southern Ontario. In addition, the city will also have a new claim to fame soon, when it becomes home to Canada’s longest pier on the great lakes. It’s going to be an impressive 600 metres!

2. The diversity

There’s no denying that Toronto is one of the most multicultural places on the planet, but Mississauga has its fair share of diversity, too. The city boasts a large population of immigrants from all over the world, including India, Philippines, Portugal, China, and many other places.

Walking around, you’ll overhear a lot of different languages spoken—and depending on where you are, you’ll likely see restaurants serving cuisine from around the world. Put simply, Mississauga is a warm and welcoming place, and it shows.

3. It’s a retail lovers paradise

Do you like to shop? You’re not alone. While there are some fabulous boutiques in Mississauga, the city is better known for its incredible malls. Of course, the one that tends to get the most attention is Square One, which is the largest shopping centre in Ontario and the second largest in Canada. It’s truly a shopper’s paradise!

Other popular retail hotspots include Erin Mills Town Centre and Dixie Outlet Mall, just to name a couple. Whether you’re shopping for yourself, a friend or family member, or simply browsing, you won’t be disappointed by the convenient malls of Mississauga.

4. It’s a great place to explore arts and culture

Are you the creative type? If you’re involved in or inspired by the arts, you’ll want to explore what Mississauga has to offer. Honestly, there’s a little bit of something for everyone.

If you’re an art lover, you’ll appreciate the impressive collection and ongoing exhibitions and workshops at The Art Gallery of Mississauga. Classical music fans should check out the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra, while those with kids will love Cow Over Moon Theatre (which provides interactive, family-friendly theatrical experiences).

If you’re more interested in getting a taste of local culture, there are many events to enjoy throughout the year. Port Credit Busker Festival (where you’ll see acts from around the world) is an annual favourite, as is the Mississauga Waterfront Festival (which features winter carnival activities).

5. The neighbourhoods

I like to think there’s a little something for everyone in Mississauga—and a neighbourhood for everyone, too. It’s just a matter of finding the one that’s right for you.

Looking for a community that offers the very best of suburban living? With its winding streets, gently rolling hills, and mature trees, Erin Mills fits the bill. Would a hip, urban village feel suit you better? If so, Streetsville may be for you. Try Port Credit if you’re searching for a beautiful waterfront and plenty of recreation, or lively City Centre if an impressive skyline is what you’re seeking.

No matter where you’re thinking of living in Mississauga, the first step is getting to know the area—and what’s available there. An experienced local real estate professional can help you get familiar with your potential future home!
