5 Things to Love About Living in Durham Region

December 20th, 2021 / Durham Region

Few Southern Ontario areas have as much to offer as Durham Region. From Oshawa to Pickering and Ajax to Whitby, the communities here are wonderful places to live. It’s why I’m so passionate about helping buyers settle into their ideal home and community in the area.

While there are countless reasons to consider a move to Durham Region, let’s start by considering these five…

1. Two words: Waterfront Trail

No matter where you choose to live, staying active is important. Living close to the Waterfront Trail makes that easy, and it also allows you to take in stunning views of local surroundings. At 1400 kilometres, this gorgeous stretch—which runs alongside Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair, and the Niagara, St. Lawrence, and Detroit Rivers—is truly impressive.

The good news for Durham Region residents? The trail goes through Oshawa, Ajax, Whitby, Pickering, and other parts of the area. Along with plenty of nature, it also passes by a collection of ports and small businesses (including some lovely eateries). Having access to this trail is truly a gift for those who live here!

2. There are many fantastic places to grab a bite

Who doesn’t love a great meal? In York Region, it’s never something that’s hard to find. From casual eateries to fine dining establishments, you’ll find it all.

In Whitby, The Lake Grill is a must-visit for French cuisine. Seafood lovers won’t be disappointed! In Ajax, Churrasco of Portugal is beloved by the locals. The traditional dishes featuring flavourful grilled meat are a true delight. Pickering’s Silverspoon serves up seriously delicious Indian and Pakistani food, while Oshawa’s Avanti Trattoria is known for authentic Italian. I couldn’t leave 3612 Fine Dining Bistro in Uxbridge off this list. If you’re seeking some special-occasion fare, you can savour five delectable courses here.

3. There’s so much to do

If you’re somebody who likes to make the most of your evenings and weekends, fun is never far away in Durham Region. You’ll find a steady stream of events that are close to home, such as the local farmer’s markets. From Pickering to Oshawa to Uxbridge, the area’s markets are ideal places to buy local produce, cured meats, baked goods—whatever the finest vendors have to offer!

Other Durham Region favourites include (but aren’t limited to) the Kiwanis Music Festival for fans of the arts in Whitby and Oshawa, Whitby Ribfest for award-winning cuts of meat, and Oshawa Peony Festival—where visitors can view a multitude of beautiful flowers.

4. Commuting is easy

The number of commuters who move from Durham Region to Toronto every day is astonishing. To make life easier, the area has evolved to accommodate a very large volume of day-to-day travellers. Wherever you want to go in the immediate region or The GTA at large, you’ll be set up for success.

Doing a quick shopping close to home? The buses run by Durham Transit Authority have you covered. Heading to Toronto, Hamilton, Peterborough, or somewhere else nearby to work or play? Find the nearest GO station to get there quickly and efficiently. If you drive, your access to major highways will also also be impeccable.

5. It’s communities are something special

Of course, every region is made up of smaller communities, and Durham Region is no exception. This little corner of the world is home to some very attractive, convenient, and family-friendly areas for you to discover.

To name just a few local options you’ll love, Amberlea in Pickering is known for its fantastic mix of detached homes and great schools, while Oshawa’s McLaughlin provides incredible amenities (like the Oshawa Centre Mall) and a strong family feel. Rolling Acres in Whitby is known for its great parks, kid-friendly amenities, and easy access to highways, while places like Vanier and Bowmanville are remarkably affordable and very liveable.
